Question
I have a 10 month old male Yorkie. Everytime he goes to the bathroom he wets all over himself.
I have never cut his hair, don’t really want to.
This happens if he squats or lifts his leg.
Does this situation improve as he matures?
Do most people cut the hair on a male to avoid this?
I have noticed that all of the long haired Yorkies are females.
Help!
Answer
This is quite common in yorkies with long hair. Many owners, myself included trim the hair around their private area.
It is best to do it just after a bath when their hair is wet so that you can see clearly that you are trimming safely.
However, if this is the first time you will trim his hair it might be an idea to go to a professional groomer so that they can show you how best to trim.

THIS IS RENEGAR IN COSTA RICA. I HAVE ALREADY CLEANED HIS PRIVATE AREA. POSSIBLY YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND. HE WETS HIS SIDE HAIR EVERY TIME.

There are a number of things that you can do to help avoid this issue:
First, many people trim the belly hair on males and leave the hair long on the immediate private area 9the hair can help direct the urine away from the hair).
Second, if you plan to leave your boy’s hair long, you may want to wrap his hair (or at least put it in pony tails). Yorkshire terrier show dogs don’t look like show dogs on a daily basis. Their hair is wrapped and kept off the floor unless they are in the ring. 🙂 it is nearly impossible to keep a Yorkie with floor-length hair clean and tangle free.
Also, you can check out my shampoo and conditioner (yorkieshampoo.com) – it is organic and safe to use more frequently than “normal” shampoo, so you don’t have to feel bad about giving more frequent baths.
