9 Week Old Yorkie: Complete Care Guide

Bringing home a 9-week-old Yorkie puppy is exciting — and a little overwhelming! At this age, your puppy is at a critical developmental stage. Here’s everything you need to know.

What to Expect at 9 Weeks

A 9-week-old Yorkie puppy is tiny (typically 1-2 pounds), full of energy, and learning about the world. They sleep a lot (18-20 hours a day) but are alert and curious when awake.

Feeding Schedule

  • Frequency: 4 small meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime snack)
  • Portion size: About 1/4 cup total per day, split across meals
  • Food type: High-quality small-breed puppy kibble (soaked in warm water to soften)
  • Treats: Use tiny training treats — no more than 10% of daily calories

Potty Training at 9 Weeks

Your 9-week-old Yorkie has limited bladder control. Take them out:

  • First thing in the morning
  • After every meal (within 5-10 minutes)
  • After naps
  • After playtime
  • Every 2 hours during the day
  • Once during the night (set an alarm)

Sleep Schedule

Puppies this age need about 18-20 hours of sleep. Create a routine: awake for 30-45 minutes, then nap in their crate for 2 hours. A consistent schedule prevents overtired, cranky puppies.

Socialisation

Weeks 8-12 are a critical socialisation window. Safely introduce your Yorkie to:

  • Different surfaces (grass, carpet, tile, concrete)
  • Household sounds (vacuum, doorbell, TV)
  • Gentle handling (paws, ears, mouth — for future grooming)
  • Car rides (short, positive trips)
  • People of all ages (supervised, positive interactions only)

Wait until fully vaccinated before meeting unknown dogs or visiting public places.

First Vet Visit

Your 9-week-old should have had their first vaccination at 6-8 weeks. Schedule the second round for 10-12 weeks. The vet will also do a health check, discuss deworming, and may recommend microchipping.

Common Concerns at This Age

  • Biting — Teething starts around 12 weeks. Provide plenty of safe chew toys.
  • Separation anxiety — Start crate training and short alone-time sessions immediately.
  • Accidents — Expect them! Never punish — reward successful potty trips.
