My Dog Ate Chocolate – What to Do: Complete Yorkie Chocolate Toxicity Guide

My Dog Ate Chocolate — What to Do: A Complete Guide for Yorkie Owners

Chocolate poisoning is one of the most common emergencies Yorkie owners face. Because Yorkies are so small, even a small amount of chocolate can be dangerous. This guide covers everything you need to know — from toxicity levels to emergency steps.

Is Chocolate Dangerous for Dogs?

Yes. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, two stimulants that dogs cannot metabolise effectively. These substances build up in your dog’s system and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, seizures, and in severe cases, death. The smaller the dog, the smaller the amount needed to cause harm — which is why Yorkies are particularly at risk.

Chocolate Toxicity by Type

Different types of chocolate have vastly different levels of theobromine. Here is how they compare:

Chocolate Type Theobromine Level Danger Level for a 5lb Yorkie
White chocolate Very low Low — mainly fat and sugar risk
Milk chocolate Moderate ~1 ounce can cause mild symptoms
Dark chocolate (50–70%) High ~0.3 ounces can cause symptoms
Baking chocolate (unsweetened) Very high ~0.1 ounces can be dangerous
Cocoa powder Highest A teaspoon can be serious

Symptoms of Chocolate Poisoning

Symptoms usually appear within 6–12 hours of ingestion, but can start sooner. Watch for:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Pacing or panting excessively
  • Muscle tremors or twitching
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Seizures (in severe cases)

If your Yorkie shows any of these signs after eating chocolate, contact your vet immediately.

What to Do If Your Yorkie Eats Chocolate

  1. Stay calm — panic does not help, but quick action does
  2. Identify the chocolate type and amount — check the wrapper. How much did your Yorkie eat and what kind was it?
  3. Call your vet or a pet poison helpline immediately — do not wait for symptoms to appear
  4. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed — your vet will tell you if this is necessary and how to do it safely
  5. Take your Yorkie to the vet if advised — treatment may include induced vomiting, activated charcoal, IV fluids, and monitoring

Emergency numbers to save in your phone:

  • Your regular veterinarian
  • Nearest 24-hour emergency animal hospital
  • ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435
  • Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661

Prevention Tips

  • Store all chocolate products in sealed containers out of reach
  • Remind family members and guests not to feed chocolate to your Yorkie
  • Be especially vigilant during holidays (Easter, Halloween, Christmas) when chocolate is more common in the home
  • Keep guests’ handbags and suitcases out of reach — chocolate is often stored inside

Why Pet Insurance Matters for Yorkies

Emergency vet visits for chocolate poisoning can cost hundreds to thousands of pounds, depending on the severity. Pet insurance can save you from having to make a difficult financial decision in an emergency. Top-rated providers for Yorkie owners include:

  • Trupanion — pays vets directly at checkout (90% of the bill), unlimited lifetime payouts, no annual caps.
Compare pet insurance plans on Amazon →
  • Healthy Paws — unlimited annual coverage, fast claims processing, direct pay available for emergencies.
    Shop pet insurance options →
  • MetLife Pet Insurance — immediate accident coverage with no waiting period for injuries, ideal for sudden emergencies like chocolate ingestion.
Shop emergency first aid kits →

Having an emergency fund or pet insurance in place before an accident happens means you can focus on your Yorkie’s health rather than worrying about the bill.
