I Want a Yorkie: Is a Yorkshire Terrier Right for You?

I Want a Yorkie: Is a Yorkshire Terrier Right for You?

So you want a Yorkie! Yorkshire Terriers are wonderful companions, but they’re not the right fit for everyone. Here’s what you need to know before bringing one home.

The Good: Why Yorkies Are Amazing

  • Big personality, small size — Yorkies pack a huge personality into a tiny body. They’re confident, fearless, and full of character.
  • Excellent apartment dogs — They adapt well to small spaces and don’t need a yard.
  • Long lifespan — Yorkies typically live 12-15 years with proper care.
  • Hypoallergenic coat — Their hair is similar to human hair, making them a good choice for allergy sufferers.
  • Portable — Easy to take everywhere, from cafes to travel.
  • Loyal and affectionate — Yorkies form incredibly strong bonds with their owners.

The Challenges: What to Consider

  • Grooming needs — Yorkies need daily brushing and professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Their long coat mats easily.
  • Stubborn streak — Yorkies are intelligent but can be stubborn. Consistent training is essential.
  • Fragile — Their small size means they can be injured by rough handling, falls, or larger dogs.
  • Barking — Yorkies are alert watchdogs and can be vocal. Training helps manage excessive barking.
  • House training challenges — Small bladders mean more frequent potty breaks. Consistent crate training is recommended.
  • Separation anxiety — Yorkies bond deeply and can struggle when left alone for long periods.

Costs to Consider

  • Purchase price: $1,500-$4,000 from a reputable breeder
  • Annual vet care: $500-$1,000 (vaccinations, check-ups, dental)
  • Grooming: $50-$80 per session, every 4-6 weeks
  • Food and supplies: $400-$800 per year
  • Pet insurance: $20-$40 per month

Is a Yorkie Right for Your Lifestyle?

Good fit if: You work from home, have a calm household, enjoy grooming, live in an apartment, or want a portable companion.

Not ideal if: You have very young children, are away from home for long hours, or don’t have time for training and grooming.

Adoption vs. Breeder

Consider adopting a Yorkie or Yorkie mix from a rescue organisation. Many wonderful Yorkies need homes. If you choose a breeder, research thoroughly — avoid puppy mills and backyard breeders at all costs.
