Leptospirosis in Dogs — Symptoms, Treatment, and Vaccine Guide for Yorkie Owners

27 April, 2017 YorkieAdmin Leave a Comment

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that can affect dogs and humans alike. Caused by Leptospira bacteria, it is zoonotic — meaning it can spread from infected animals to people. The good news is that it is preventable with vaccination and treatable with prompt veterinary care.

How Dogs Get Leptospirosis

Dogs contract leptospirosis through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals. Common carriers include rats, mice, raccoons, and other wildlife. Your Yorkie is at risk if they drink from puddles, ponds, or slow-moving streams — even on a casual walk.

The bacteria enter through the skin (especially cuts or abrasions) or mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and eyes.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis in Dogs

Symptoms appear 2 to 14 days after exposure and range from mild to severe:

  • Early signs: Sudden lethargy, high fever, shivering, muscle tenderness, decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
  • Advanced signs (organ damage): Jaundice (yellowing of eyes and gums) indicating liver damage, excessive drinking and urination or total lack of urine (kidney stress), blood in urine or stool, nosebleeds, and laboured breathing.

Treatment for Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is treated aggressively with a combination of antibiotics and supportive care:

The Leptospirosis Vaccine

The AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) now classifies the leptospirosis vaccine as a core recommendation for all dogs, regardless of size or lifestyle. Modern vaccines are safe, highly effective, and protect against the four most common strains.

  • Initial series: Puppies or unvaccinated adults receive a first dose followed by a booster 2 to 4 weeks later.
  • Annual booster: Required yearly to maintain protection.
  • Safety: Modern vaccines are highly refined. Mild, temporary soreness or fatigue may occur but serious reactions are very rare.

Prevention Tips

  • Vaccinate your Yorkie annually against leptospirosis.
  • Prevent drinking from puddles, ponds, and slow-moving water.
  • Keep your property free of rodents.
  • Wear gloves when handling bedding or cleaning accidents if you suspect exposure.
