New Yorkie Owner

Question

Hello! I have just recently got a yorkie puppy who is 7 weeks old. She is doing great and is potty trained outside for the most part.

My concern is that I am a school teacher and will have to leave my yorkie alone from about 7am to about 5pm. I am on break right now but will have to return in about a week.

My parents are not willing to let me leave the dog out of the crate while I am away. Therefore, it will be in the crate for that long without anyone being able to let it out during the day.

Will my yorkie Bella be ok for this long being locked up in her crate? Will this keep her from staying potty trained to go outside. My parents are also against potty pads and will not let me train her to them.

I have never owned a yorkie before and was concerned.

Thank you!

Answer

10 hours is way to long to leave your yorkie locked up in a crate.

She will obviously need to relieve herself and then she will have to spend the rest of her day in her pee or poop. This is very cruel.

Why do your parents refuse to allow her out in the house with them? If she is already potty trained she should be allowed to run about.

Other than the fact that she will be locked up for too long and probably with her waste, who’s going to talk to her and keep her company? This is very sad!

This is my own opinion, but I believe you should try and find another way or think about giving up the yorkie to a better home!

    Cruel and abusive

Why even get this dog?? Its cruel and I feel abusive of you to get a puppy and then lock it up 10hrs a day. what do you do at night? Lock her up again?

Yorkies need companionship and human contact. She will not only be locked up but she will be stressed out for lack of human contact.

You need to find her a better home.

    7 week old??

I’m concerned that you have a 7 week old. Don’t know where you got her but a good breeder wouldn’t have let you have her until 12 weeks of age.

You should take her back or find a good home for her since you can’t take proper care of her.

There are SO MANY things wrong with this

There are SO MANY things wrong with this whole picture I don’t know where to start! Of course the very first thing that made my mouth drop was the fact this pup is only 7 weeks old and that alone makes me upset. I do not understand why some breeders allow their pups to leave so early.

I was at petsmart Sunday and these people had a tiny pup that was part boxer (big dogs) and it looked like it was a chihuahua mix to me. Then I heard the guy say it was 5 weeks old! I about blew a gasket! Yes I opened my mouth, normally I don’t do that kind of thing but i was so angry!

I spoke up and told him he should not have that puppy out let alone in a pet store where other dogs are. And then I said a lot about taking a puppy away from it’s mother at such a young age. Oh he pretty much ignored me but i HAD to say something. I was shaking I was so upset, I had to walk away.

Back to this lady. She still lives at home, fine, but why get a puppy if your family is not for it and willing to help out? And potty trained to go outside already at 7 weeks? NO WAY!!!! It is not even possible. Yeah I am sure she goes when you take her out but I am sure she is not trained in the way we all know what really being trained means. All you are doing is “catching” her at the right time, and I am betting you are holding her the rest of the time.

Even though people are saying she should give the puppy up, which I agree completely, I am certain she wont. So if you are going to have to be gone all day, get an Ex-Pen, a litter box (just a cheap open one) and use dog litter or wood pellets for pellet stoves which is cheap and works very well. Teach her to potty in there and stop taking her outdoors for now as it will only confuse her. Put a bed or blanket in the pen as well, water, food and some toys.

Make sure you get up early and give her lots of play time with you, and come straight home and as soon as you walk in the door take her out of the pen and spend the rest of the evening with her. But i am telling you, even if you do this you are being unfair and almost cruel to make her live like that. Locking her in a crate all day, would definitely be cruel.

But my gut advice to you is to re-home this puppy NOW. Don’t take her back to the breeder, the breeder is obviously irresponsible to say the least! It breaks my heart reading about your situation and this poor puppy. My gut was in knots reading it and thinking about the life this puppy is going to have. I am sure you have the best intentions, but please, I beg you, think of the puppy. Do what is right for her and when you are truly ready and able to give more time to a puppy get another one then. Right now is just not a good time in your life to be having a puppy, or even an adult dog.

    yorkie puppies are very sociable

We have a yorkie puppy who is ten weeks and he is so sociable I think your puppy will be quite distressed being left for this amount of time in a crate …… Did you not think about this before getting him ?

    Hello everyone

Hello everyone, this individual asked for advice and it appears that everyone is attacking him or her. I encourage everyone to keep their personal opinions to his or herselves and try to share your experience as a yorkie owner. Please educate and not attack the individual. I agree that leaving the Yorkshire alone for so many hours is not good. Maybe you can have family stay with it until you come home. 10 hours is to long of a time to be in a crate. His or her bladder will not hold that long. I suggest investing in wee wee pads for the home and continue taking it outside to do business. I also encourage you to think about another living environment because Yokies need TLC. I have two babies (yorkies ) whom I love soooo much and don’t like going to the store without them. Good luck my dear.

    pet sitter?

you could always fined a pet setter or a doggie day care, i agree they should not be left alone for that long of time , i have 2 yorkies but i am home all day with them, the longest i have left them is to run to the store or may be go see a movie, will be thinking of you and your bella, i know it will be hard to give her up….

    Why is everybody attacking

Why is everybody attacking this woman? She asked a very important question out of concern.

Give her the credit for that. If she didnt care about this pup, then she would have followed her ignorant parent’s advice and keep the pup lock up in a crate for that long period, but her gut told her that it wouldnt be right. That is why she spoke her concern. Give sound advice and dont attack.

There are many other ways in suggesting what would be best for the pup. I believe this woman dearly cares for and love her yorkie, but going on like this is really uncalled for.

Lastly, shame on you, the irresponsible breeder who sold such a young pup to this lady. Just another breeder who does it for the love of money and not the breed. Sis on you!!!!!!

    yorkie that’s spoiled rotten

These comments you all have shared has helped me a lot also. I have a yorkie that’s just spoiled rotten. He is so hyper that he acts as if he don’t have time to stop and urinate. He does it while running threw the house. I find dry streaks of urine all the time on the floor. I’m going to try the litter box and see if he will use it. I have pads out for him but he chews them up instead of playing with his toys. I have bunches of toys for him to play with but he likes to chew the pads up. He also have chew toys too. He is 15 months old. I love my lil bad baby though.

I agree with you Franca. Just imagine how the school kids will enjoy her, that is if the principal will allow it. And imagine if every teacher wants to bring their pups to school…lol

    Yorkies need attention

if you are not at home during the day YOU should not have got a yorkie, they need to be with somebody all the time. My friend in durban works at a nursery, she takes cookie with her, and she loves all the attention

    Rehome yorkie?

Do think it would be best to rehome and wait till you are in a better position to own and enjoy having a puppy. They are like having a baby they need lots of love, playtime etc or they will never learn anything and could become nervous and aggressive. treated right and socialised well will give you many years of enjoyment and bring a lot to any household. You need to think about your dogs feelings and not your own (would you like to be confined to one space for 10 hours 5 days a week? Hope you find it a nice loving home, good luck
