What Is a Parti Yorkie?
A Parti Yorkshire Terrier is a Yorkie with a coat that is predominantly white with patches of black and tan (or gold). While the traditional Yorkie coat is blue and tan, Parti Yorkies have a white base with coloured patches — similar to how a Parti Poodle looks.
Are Parti Yorkies Recognised by the AKC?
Yes! Despite what some breeders may claim, Parti Yorkies are purebred Yorkshire Terriers and are recognised by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The key distinction is that the white colouring is considered a disqualifying fault in the show ring, meaning they can’t compete in conformation events. However, they can still be registered as purebred Yorkies and make wonderful pets. The AKC first acknowledged the Parti gene as naturally occurring in Yorkies in 2000.
Are Parti Yorkies Mixed Breeds?
No, Parti Yorkies are not mixed breeds. The Parti colouring comes from a recessive gene that both parents must carry. If a breeder tells you to stay away from Parti Yorkies because they’re mixed, they are misinformed. The Parti gene (the piebald gene) is naturally present in the Yorkshire Terrier gene pool. Reputable breeders who produce Parti Yorkies are breeding purebred Yorkies — they just happen to carry the recessive gene for the white colouring.
Are Parti Yorkies Healthier?
There is some debate in the Yorkie community about whether Parti Yorkies are healthier. Some breeders believe that since the Parti gene is a naturally occurring recessive trait, it may indicate a more diverse gene pool. However, there is no scientific evidence that Parti Yorkies are inherently healthier or less healthy than traditional-coloured Yorkies. As with any dog, health depends on responsible breeding practices, not coat colour.
Final Thoughts
If you’re considering a Parti Yorkie, the most important thing is to find a reputable breeder who health-tests their dogs, regardless of coat colour. A Parti Yorkie can be just as wonderful a companion as a traditionally coloured Yorkie. The white patches give them a unique, beautiful appearance that many owners love.
Parti yorkies
I have two parti yorkies and they are AKC registered but you can’t show them.
White coat?
The white coat is strange, don’t think I could ever get use to a Yorkie looking like that. It takes decades for the AKC to make changes in the standard for a breed.
pretty sure
Pretty sure they are not accepted by the AKC. No, nada, not a chance!
