Pet Safety in the Car – Protecting Your Yorkie While Driving

9 May, 2017 YorkieAdmin Leave a Comment

Yorkie owners are becoming more conscious about pet safety. More owners are taking their Yorkies wherever they go in the hope that their little companion will have a great time as well.

Cars have become part of everyday life and pet safety when travelling in cars should be treated with the utmost importance. If you are not sure of how to ensure your pets safety during the trip then read the following information carefully.

Prior to leaving be sure to give your Yorkie a good walk so that it can relieve itself and get some exercise. By relieving itself there is less chance of it doing anything in the car and the exercise will hopefully be enough to keep it calm during the journey. An overexcited or energetic Yorkie during a trip can be very dangerous for the driver, especially if there is no one else in the car to look after it. Under no circumstances give your Yorkie a sedative though. If you have an accident or anything should happen it is best that your Yorkie is asleep naturally that way it can wake up.

Refrain from giving your Yorkie any food or drink before you leave because, as you probably know, Yorkie’s, especially males, are prone to relieving themselves in almost any situation. It is best to take a break every couple of hours and then give it a bit of food and a small drink, followed by a little walk so that it can stretch its legs.

Once in the car remember that Yorkie’s do not like the extreme heat. Many people don’t realise but one element of pet safety that is paramount when travelling by car is the temperature. Put up the air conditioning on a hot day or at least make sure that the area your dog is in is well ventilated.

On the hand, if the weather is extremely cold use the heating and/or provide your Yorkie with ample blankets so that it can keep warm.

Car seats for dogs of any size are available. There is a large selection of colours, textures and sizes for smaller dogs like Yorkshire Terriers. A car seat is a great idea because it will provide your Yorkie with supreme comfort and really good protection. In fact you will like it so much that you will want to pass over the driving responsibilities and climb in with it!

Finally use your common sense. Park in areas with shade, give your dog (and yourself) breaks during the journey and keep a small supply of food and drink for those breaks. Taking a few items will also help, like; dog bowl, dog blankets, dog clothes, dog treats, dog chews, water and towel.
