Yorkie Shih Tzu Mix — Complete Shorkie Breed Guide

The Yorkie Shih Tzu mix, commonly known as the Shorkie, is a popular designer breed that combines the Yorkshire Terrier with the Shih Tzu. These small, affectionate dogs are known for their playful personalities and adorable teddy-bear looks.

Shorkies make excellent companions for families, seniors, and first-time dog owners. They inherit the best traits from both parent breeds — the confidence of the Yorkie and the friendly nature of the Shih Tzu.

Shorkie Appearance

Shorkies typically have a soft, silky coat that can be straight or slightly wavy. Their faces often have the shorter muzzle of the Shih Tzu combined with the dark, expressive eyes of the Yorkie. Colours vary widely and include black and tan, brown, white, and combinations of all three.

Most Shorkies weigh between 5 and 15 pounds and stand 6 to 11 inches tall, depending on which parent breed they take after more.

Shorkie Temperament

Shorkies are affectionate, playful, and enjoy being the centre of attention. They bond closely with their owners and love to cuddle — many Shorkies will sit on your feet or chest given the chance, as one owner from Milwaukee shared about her 5-pound Shorkie.

They can be energetic and love their daily walks, but they are equally happy lounging on the sofa. Early socialisation is important to prevent nippiness with children or strangers.

Shorkie Size and Weight

  • Weight: 5–15 pounds
  • Height: 6–11 inches
  • Lifespan: 11–16 years

Shorkie Grooming

Shorkies have a medium to long coat that requires regular brushing — at least 3–4 times per week — to prevent matting. Many owners opt for a shorter “puppy cut” for easier maintenance. Regular dental care, nail trimming, and ear cleaning are also essential.

Is a Shorkie Right for You?

Shorkies are ideal for apartment living and do well in smaller homes. They are well-suited to:

  • Families with older children
  • Seniors looking for a lap dog
  • First-time dog owners
  • People who work from home (they dislike being left alone for long periods)
