Yorkie Topknot — How to Tie Your Yorkshire Terrier’s Hair

Yorkie Topknot — How to Tie Your Yorkshire Terrier’s Hair

The Yorkie topknot is one of the most iconic hairstyles for Yorkshire Terriers. Not only does it look adorable, but it also serves a practical purpose — keeping the hair out of your Yorkie’s eyes so they can see clearly and comfortably.

Whether you’re preparing for a dog show or just want your Yorkie to look their best, learning to tie a proper topknot is a valuable grooming skill.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies:

  • A fine-toothed comb to smooth and part the hair
  • Small elastic bands — the tiny, fabric-covered ones designed for dogs (not rubber bands, which can pull and break hair)
  • Optional: a small bow or ribbon for decoration
  • A detangling spray for easier brushing

Step-by-Step: How to Tie a Yorkie Topknot

Step 1: Brush the hair

Start with clean, dry, well-brushed hair. Part your Yorkie’s hair down the middle of the head from the eyes to the ears. The topknot section should be the hair on top of the head, from the brow line back to just behind the ears.

Step 2: Gather the hair

Using your fingers or a comb, gather the hair from the top of the head into a ponytail at the crown. Make sure you’re not pulling too tightly — the hair should be secure but comfortable.

Step 3: Secure with an elastic band

Wrap a small fabric-covered elastic band around the gathered hair. Wrap it twice (not too tight!) to secure it. The band should sit about an inch from the base of the hair.

Step 4: Shape the topknot

Fan the hair out slightly around the elastic for a fuller look, or leave it as a simple ponytail. For shows, the hair is typically fanned into a round, pom-pom-like shape.

Step 5: Add a bow (optional)

For an extra-cute finishing touch, add a small bow or ribbon just above the elastic band.

Tips for a Perfect Topknot

  • Don’t make it too tight — a tight topknot can cause hair loss or discomfort
  • Use fabric bands, not rubber — rubber bands grip too hard and break the hair
  • Change the position — alternate between topknot and letting the hair down to avoid stress on the same area
  • Never leave a topknot in overnight — take it out before bed to prevent matting
  • Keep the hair clean — topknots hold moisture and can lead to skin irritation if left in dirty hair

Topknot Alternatives

If your Yorkie doesn’t enjoy the topknot, or if you want to mix things up, try these alternatives:

  • Two small topknots (one on each side) — very cute and puppy-like
  • One low ponytail at the back of the head
  • Side-swept with a small clip — good for short hair that can’t reach the crown
