Yorkshire Terrier Questions and Answers

What our readers have been asking most

Welcome to our yorkshire terrier questions and answers section!

Our readers sure have a lot of questions about their beloved Yorkies. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions:

General Yorkie Questions

How big do Yorkies get?

Full-grown Yorkshire Terriers typically weigh between 4 and 7 pounds and stand 7 to 8 inches tall. Some can be slightly larger, especially if they are from breeding lines outside the standard. Learn more about Yorkie size and growth.

How long do Yorkies live?

The average lifespan of a Yorkshire Terrier is 12 to 15 years, with many living well into their teens with proper care. Some Yorkies have been known to reach 17 or 18 years. Read our full guide to Yorkie lifespan.

Are Yorkies hypoallergenic?

Yorkies have hair rather than fur, which means they shed very little. This makes them a good choice for many allergy sufferers — but no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic. Their hair-like coat produces less dander than fur, which is what triggers most allergies.

Do Yorkies bark a lot?

Yorkies are known for being alert and vocal. They make excellent watchdogs and will bark to alert you to visitors, unusual sounds, or anything they find concerning. Training and socialisation can help manage excessive barking.

Health Questions

What health problems are Yorkies prone to?

Yorkshire Terriers are generally healthy but can be prone to dental disease, patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, liver shunts, and eye problems. Visit our Yorkie Health section for detailed information on each condition.

Do Yorkies have sensitive stomachs?

Yes, many Yorkies have sensitive digestive systems. A high-quality diet with limited ingredients often helps. See our dog food recommendations for Yorkies with sensitive stomachs.

Training Questions

Are Yorkies easy to train?

Yorkies are intelligent and eager to please, but they can also be stubborn. Consistent, positive reinforcement training works best. Read our complete training guide for Yorkie-specific tips.

Is it hard to house train a Yorkie?

House training a Yorkie can be challenging due to their small bladder size. Consistency, crate training, and frequent potty breaks are essential. Our house training guide covers everything you need to know.

Breed Information Questions

What is a teacup Yorkie?

A teacup Yorkie is a smaller-than-standard Yorkshire Terrier, typically weighing under 4 pounds. They are not a separate breed and are not recognised by the AKC. Read more about teacup Yorkies.

What colours do Yorkies come in?

Yorkie puppies are born black and tan, gradually transitioning to blue and gold or blue and tan as adults. Other colour variations include chocolate and parti-colour. See our full guide to Yorkie colours.

Are Yorkies good with children?

Yorkies can be good with older, gentle children who understand how to handle a small dog. Their small size makes them vulnerable to accidental injury from young children.

Can Yorkies be left alone?

Yorkies are companion dogs that prefer company. They can be left alone for moderate periods if properly trained, but may develop separation anxiety if left alone for long hours. Read our guide on Yorkies and separation anxiety.

My Yorkie has diarrhea with clear jelly like substance with some bright red in it. Did not bubble with peroxide so not sure if it was blood. It only lasted half day. He had no change in appetite, behavior or weight. Then it came back. I put him on unsalted chicken broth but so far it hasn’t helped. Any advise or someone with experience with this???

I got my new female Yorkie puppy yesterday , of course she is playful, energetic and cute as anything. I’m looking for ideas to help my almost 4 year old Yorkie to but look like his life is over😞I have been giving him tons of attention and my new pup really wants to play with him. But he just runs away or jumps on the couch. I have an older westie and she can care less. Lol.
My make hadn’t growled at her or showed anything but politeness. But I really thought it would be wonderful for him to have a playmate to run with. It’s nreaking my heart. I love him dearly.
    Any ideas ???
