Question

I just got a 3 month old female , my daughter named her Hersheys – yes like the chocolate. I’d just like to know how often should I bath my yorkie?

Thank you in advance.

Answer

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

How often to bathe a Yorkie depends on several factors, including their activity level, coat condition, and lifestyle.

Generally, they do not require frequent baths like some other breeds. Over-bathing can strip their coat of natural oils and lead to skin dryness and irritation.

Here are some guidelines for determining how often to bathe your Yorkie:

  1. The way we did this with our Harry is, as a puppy with short hair we used to bathe him about once every 2 weeks, then we went through a stage where he had his full coat and we used to bathe him once a week, then when we decided to cut his hair again we took it back to once every 2 weeks.  In most cases, bathing your Yorkie every 2  to 4 weeks should be sufficient. This allows enough time for their coat to replenish its natural oils and maintain its health and luster.
  2. If your Yorkie gets particularly dirty or smelly from outdoor activities or encounters with dirt and debris, you can bathe them on an as-needed basis. However, try to spot-clean dirty areas or use dry shampoo when possible to avoid frequent full baths.
  3. If your Yorkie has a skin condition or is prone to allergies, your veterinarian may recommend a specific bathing schedule to address those issues. Some skin conditions may require more frequent baths with medicated shampoos to manage the problem effectively.
  4. If you groom your Yorkie regularly, which includes brushing and combing their coat to prevent tangles and matting, you may find that you can space out baths a bit more.

Remember that while Yorkies do not need frequent baths, regular grooming is essential to keep their coat in good condition. Brush your Yorkie’s hair at least a few times a week to remove tangles and dirt, and check their ears, eyes, and nails regularly.

If you’re uncertain about the appropriate bathing schedule for your specific Yorkie, it’s always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian or a professional dog groomer. They can provide personalized advice based on your Yorkie’s individual needs and lifestyle.
