Liver Shunts

6 April, 2017 YorkieAdmin 3 Comments

My seven year old Yorkie has been diagnosed with liver shunts.

I have been looking on line for help but wanted to know if anyone has ever had this happen.

He is on medication but I have been told if it doesn’t work he will require surgery costing over 5000.00 with a 80% success rate.

As much as I love him I can’t afford the surgery.

Wondering if anyone knows of anything diet wise or natural remedies to help??

    Liver shunts

I know Hills makes the L/D diet and most furry babies are put on this diet. Please check around with different vet hospitals for costs and ask how many times they have done the surgery. Gosh this is awful……….

Check around for a better price.

My little Yorkie was diagnosed with a liver shunt when she was 16 months old. I don’t know where you live but I am in Texas and my vet sent us to A&M for her to have surgery. That was about 11 years ago. We just lost her last April because of a back injury. Anyway, it only cost us about $1200 at the university. Maybe you could look into something like that for your little dog. That was still a lot of money to us but I couldn’t think of not having it done if there was any way possible. Thank goodness for credit cards.

Prescribed diet food for liver shunt disease

My yorkie was diagnosed with having liver shunt I researched like crazy on what I could feed her because everything she ate she vomited. Online I came upon a food that’s specially for dogs that have a bad liver, your vet has to give you a prescription for it. It’s called ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET CANINE HEPATIC LS 14. Ever since she’s been eating this food she’s doing much better but of course this isn’t going to cure her but at least she keeps it down and her vomiting is once in a while instead of everyday. Hope this helps because it for sure helped me. I buy it on line but I was told it’s being sold now in PETSMART stores.
